NYU Newman Club is the oldest undergraduate Catholic social organization on campus.
We are named in honour of Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman; an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in the nineteenth century and founded the first Newman Society at Oxford University when Catholics were first allowed to attend Oxford in the 1860's. Newman Centers exist on College campuses all over the U.S. The NYU chapter of Newman has been in existence since 1894.
What is the purpose of the Newman Club?
Our goal is to strengthen each other in our walks with Christ and to encourage each other as we attempt to fulfill the purpose which Christ entrusted to His Church: to be the Light of the World. In addition to supporting one another, we strive to give back to the surrounding community though outreach and service projects.
All our meetings take place in a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Delicious, home-cooked dinners are provided at all of our meetings, and all are welcome to join us! Although we represent the Catholic voice on campus and strive for fidelity to the Church, our members come from various religious traditions and backgrounds. At Newman there is a place for everyone, whether you consider yourself to be a junior theologian or whether you know absolutely nothing about the Catholic faith. Nobody is left out.
Have questions about the Catholic faith? The Bible? The Church's teachings on sex, war, or social justice? Do you want to know more about the Virgin Mary, salvation, or Jesus Himself? Drop by sometime for study or some friendly discussion.
The Newman Club meets every Thursday from 7:00pm-9:00pm on the second floor of The Catholic Center at NYU.
If you have questions about the club (or the faith) you can e-mail co-president Danielle at djn235@nyu.edu or co-president Josh at ajv238@nyu.edu. We're happy to help!
